Anti aging creams and serums

Welcome to our article about anti aging creams and serums. When it comes to skincare and beauty, the first thing that women worry about are wrinkles. The signs of aging can start as early as late 20s. This has undoubtedly given rise to the need of anti-aging creams and serums. When you visit stores that sell skincare products, you will find shelves upon shelves of topical solutions that claim to either reverse the aging effects or prevent the signs of aging completely. Question is, does it all work?

In order to clear this confusion, we spoke to three dermatologists and asked them if the claims were in fact true? To our surprise, all three of them agreed! This leads us to our next question: which product or brand is best? Well, there are a few facts that you should consider before investing in anti-aging serums and creams. If you keep these facts in mind, you will be able to buy products that have guaranteed, long-term results.

Higher Price Doesn’t Mean Better

A common misconception is that if a product is pricier, it will perform better. This is not true. According to Dr. Joel Schlessinger of RealSelf, if a product costs more, it does not mean that it will give better or quicker results. It is all about understanding the science and biology behind it. The basics of choosing a product is looking at the ingredients. The product should either have antioxidants or retinol, which are active ingredients essential for anti-aging. As long as these ingredients are present in the products, it does not matter whether you buy it from a renowned dermatologist, or a drugstore or from a top luxury line.

Retinol Reverses Signs of Aging

Let’s take a closer look at retinol. It is simply an active form of Vitamin A which is essential for a younger body. As the body ages, it loses Vitamin A naturally and does not actively absorb it back. This leads to the visibility of wrinkles and a darker complexion. Using retinol can reverse this affect. When considering the fact of whether using a topical product would reverse signs of aging, you must look at the key ingredient it has. Dr. Desmer Destang, the Aesthetic Dermatology specialist says that retinol is the number one wrinkle eraser! It is, therefore, the best ingredient that reverses the signs of aging.

The board-certified and nationally-acclaimed dermatologist, Dr. Dendy Engelman elaborates that retinol is essential to build collagen and decrease discoloration. Retinoic acid specifically, helps in increasing cell turnover. Dr. Schlessinger further explain how retinol works. He says that retinol teaches skin cells, that are aging, how to behave like healthier and younger cells. It encourages these aging cells to turnover more rapidly. Keeping these explanations in mind, you can expect smoother, firmer and a brighter skin tone when using a product that contains retinol.

Antioxidants Prevents Signs of Aging

While retinol works in reversing the aging effects, antioxidants prevent it all together. Antioxidants help in promoting the repair and healing cells of the skin. This happens in the mature skin only. The strongest suit of antioxidants, however, is prevention. The damages caused to the skin from UV rays, pollution, and other environmental stressors are not a hidden fact. Antioxidants can help prevention altogether. Dr. Destang further explains that antioxidants work to support the key protein structures that lie within the skin to decelerate the degradation.

Antioxidants come in many forms namely Vitamin E and C, and green tea extract. Some are also called resveratrol and niacinamide. Vitamin C teams up with free radical scavengers and looks for missing electrons. Together, they neutralize the damages that environmental stressors mentioned above cause to the skin. Dr. Engelman explains in great detail that if you are one of those who still have not experienced the signs of aging but is worried about the near future – look for a product that is high in these ingredients.

High Concentration of Active Ingredients

Keep in mind that these active ingredients should come in higher concentrations. The higher the concentration, the better and quicker the results. The easiest way to look for an ingredient’s concentration is to look at the ranking on the box. When you see retinol or an antioxidant placed higher in the list, it means that its concentration in that product is more. You can also see the percentages to compare with other ingredients. Dr. Destang says that a high enough concentration will have a noticeable effect on your skin.

Moisturizers are Beneficial

When looking at a product, moisturizers are a good addition. Although, do not get confused, they should never be the main ingredient. Hydration for the skin is very important. It gives it a plumb feel which directly equals younger-looking skin. But for long-term benefits, the skin needs more than just moisturizer.

A well moisturized skin means a stronger barrier in order to protect the skin. Hyaluronic acid is a common ingredient found in products which acts as a moisturizer. Although it is effective, it is only the surface that is hydrated and looks plump. It is still, an important component that should not be ignored.

When using retinol, it can dry out the skin. Having hyaluronic acid in the product helps in restoring the moisturizer along with other things. Hyaluronic acid actually holds up to 1000 times its weight in water, this simply means that it can do wonders for the skin when it comes to hydration. As the body ages, the skin loses moisture and water and hyaluronic acid helps in restoring the loss. Make sure the product you choose also have Hyaluronic acid in it, in order to keep a balance when fighting aging effects.

Be Patient

It is important to be patient and positive when using any anti-aging serum for the results to kick in. You will have to be consistent to see results. Dermatologists stress the point that any products which promises results which sound too good to be true, actually are! It usually takes 4 to 8 weeks on average before you can see any visible difference.

Dr. Destang explains that the skin needs to go through a full cycle before it can produce new cells altogether. The results which become visible are actually these new cells. A consistent routine will guarantee the results. When using any serum or cream, make sure to use it every single day. The best time to use the product is before bed as nighttime is when the body regenerates new cells.
